Calacatta quartz delivers a marble-look surface without marble maintenance.

Like other engineered quartz, it is non-porous:

• No sealing required.
• No periodic stone polish needed.
• No etch risk from lemon or wine the way natural Calacatta marble etches.

Care is simple, but it is not "indestructible." Heat, harsh chemicals, and abrasives still cause callbacks that warranties often exclude.

This guide is written for fabricators, designers, and builders who need clean client handoff language, and for end users who will live with the surface. Rules below apply to Calacatta patterns and to quartz generally (MSI Q, Caesarstone, Silestone, Cambria, Daltile, and other brands stocked on GoSource).

Wipe spills when they happen. Prolonged standing liquid can leave water marks or a light film (often called patina in brand literature), more visible on dark backgrounds and on matte, honed, concrete, or rough finishes than on polished white Calacatta.

• Dried spills: re-wet the spot with water for several minutes, then clean with mild detergent. Work a wider circle than the stain, rinse, dry. Repeat if needed.
• Stubborn marks: use a brand-approved non-abrasive cleaner (examples commonly cited by manufacturers include Soft Scrub Liquid Gel type products used gently, or brand-listed cleaners). Test in an inconspicuous area first.
• Rust or metal marks: some brands allow a small amount of oxalic-acid cleanser (e.g. Bar Keepers Friend powder) on a damp cloth, wiped gently, then rinsed thoroughly. Do not grind with abrasive pads.
• Oil residue: avoid oily cleaners that leave film. Rinse thoroughly after any cleaner.

If unsure, stop and check the brand tech sheet before aggressive products.

Quartz is heat-resistant within limits. It is not a cooktop or a trivet substitute. The polymer binder that holds quartz aggregate can discolor, blister, or crack under sudden or sustained high heat (pots from the stove, slow cookers, electric skillets, open flame).

• Always use trivets, hot pads, or heat-rated mats under hot cookware and heat-generating appliances.
• This is the number-one care rule to put in bold on client handoffs. Heat damage is routinely excluded from manufacturer warranties.

Quartz resists everyday wear better than many materials, but knives and dragged ceramics still mark the surface.

• Use a cutting board. Do not chop directly on the counter.
• Avoid sliding rough stoneware or cast iron across polished Calacatta faces.
• Chips usually come from impact on edges and corners (heavy pots, dropped tools). Fabrication quality (edge profile, overhang support) reduces risk; client behavior does the rest.
• Deep chips and cracks are repair or replacement issues, not "clean with soap."

Do not use (or neutralize immediately with plenty of water if contact happens):

• Oven and grill cleaners
• Drain openers
• Paint removers / strippers
• Floor strippers and high-alkaline degreasers
• Toilet bowl cleaners
• Products with methylene chloride or trichloroethane
• Strong acids or strong bases left on the surface
• Abrasive scouring powders or steel wool on polished finishes
• Oil soaps and oily furniture polishes that leave residue
• Cleaners marketed only for granite/marble sealers when they are harsh or leave coatings quartz does not need

When in doubt: mild soap, water, soft cloth. Rinse. Dry.

• Polished Calacatta: easiest daily clean; fingerprints and metal marks show less than on textured finishes.
• Honed, matte, concrete, leathered, or rough finishes: more surface area catches metal marks, fingerprints, and film. They need more frequent wiping and non-abrasive gel cleaners. Set client expectations at selection, not at the first callback.
• Vein and background: bold gold or gray Calacatta veins do not need special cleaners, but water spots and film can interrupt the visual read of high-contrast patterns. Drying after wipe-down keeps the pattern crisp.

Quartz works on vanities and wet bars. Wipe standing water, toothpaste, and product residue. Hard-water areas benefit from daily dry-down to limit mineral film.

Avoid leaving hair dye, nail polish remover, and aggressive bathroom chemicals on the surface.

Same heat and chemical rules as kitchens.

• No sealing.
• No annual impregnator.
• No marble poultice routine for etches (quartz does not etch like calcite marble).
• No food-safe sealer for NSF-style food prep surfaces beyond normal cleaning.

If a product claims quartz "must be sealed every year," treat that as the wrong category of stone care.

Manufacturer limited warranties cover manufacturing defects under stated conditions. They generally do not cover heat damage, chemical abuse, improper fabrication/install, or failure to follow care instructions. Registration deadlines and authorized fabricator requirements vary by brand (Cambria, Caesarstone, Silestone, MSI Q, and others).
